Aeschynanthus commonly called Lipstick plant

19 September 2024/0 Comments/in General/by Judith Aber

Aeschynanthus Plant

Nothing brightens up a room like a flowering plant. The Aeschynanthus lipstick vine has pointy, waxy leaves and blooms with bright clusters of flowers.  As the flowers start to emerge, the flower looks like a tube of lipstick with vivid red blossoms emerging from a dark maroon tube. Lipstick Plants flower readily, requiring minimal care to be healthy and happy. The foliage is bright green and waxy, making Lipstick Plants attractive even when it’s not flowering.

HOW TO CARE FOR AESCHYNANTHUS PLANTS

What is the best lighting for the Aeschynanthus?
The Aeschynanthus lipstick vine will not bloom without adequate light.
Avoid placing this plant in full shade or full sun. The plant needs bright light for a portion of the day, but not all day long.
Dappled Sunlight (Shade through upper canopy all day)
Partial Shade (Direct sunlight only part of the day, 2-6 hours)

What is the best soil for Lipstick plants?
High Organic Matter Soil pH
Lipstick plant care begins with airy soil and proper fertilization.
NPK ratio liquid fertilizer gives a good result as long as you keep the soil moist.
How do i water my plant?
Rasta Lipstick Plants likes to dry out occasionally between watering.
It does not like to stay wet or sit in water or get too dry. Too much water is disastrous for growing lipstick plants meaning the plants will die.
You should water the plants moderately  with  good drainage soil and holes on the planting pot.
How to grow lipstick plants ?
Container, Slabs or Hanging Baskets for House plants
A hanging basket is a good pot for the cascading Aeschynanthus lipstick vine.
You can also grow the vine on slabs of wood, but if you do, be sure to keep the plant adequately moist.

Common issues

If the leaves turn yellow and begin to fall from the plant, it probably needs more water, light, or both.

If the leaves or leaf edges become brown, chances are that you have it in a spot that has too much sunlight or it’s receiving too little water.

If you see a reddish-brown mass having the consistency of a spider web, treat the plant with a fungicide. A good organic pesticide, like neem oil, can handle the plant’s usual pests contact MAUA AND MORE for advice on how to treat specific pests.
